SHILLONG: Meghalaya ranked among the worst-performing states in the recently released Performance Grading Index (PGI) issued by the Union Education Ministry.

As per the data, Meghalaya was listed in the Grade V category with 649 points out of 1000.

It ranked lowest among all the northeastern states while its overall ranking is 36. The state scored lowest in terms of infrastructure and facilities.

Among the other Northeastern states, Tripura’s performed best with 801 points followed by Sikkim (772), Manipur (767), Assam (738), Mizoram (723), Arunachal Pradesh (698) points, and Nagaland (667).

Overall, Punjab Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Kerala scored according to the grading index. Punjab scored maximum points for governance and management.

The PGI reviews the performance of a state in school education on the basis of the data provided by the Unified District Information System for Education Plus, National Achievement Survey, and Mid-Day Meal, and other sources.

The states are then given points on a total of 1,000 points across 70 parameters grouped under five categories.

The first PGI was released in the year 2019 for the year 2017-18 by the education ministry.
