Meghalaya: Authorities nab drug dealers, 25 kg pills recovered

The north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland share borders with Myanmar, the second largest producer of illegal opium in the world. Hence, northeast states have always faced a problem of drug influx.

Drugs have become a cultural aspect of some of the more remote areas and the youth are especially affected by drug-use and tend to form addictive habits. This seepage of drugs into mainstream north-eastern culture has also resulted in the emergence of smuggling activities in the region.

Time and again, large quantities of habit-forming drugs are nabbed in the region. Hence, we can deduce that authorities in Shillong were hardly surprised when they nabbed 2.9 crores worth of a banned pill called World is Yours (a harmful mix of methamphetamine and caffeine) from the hub of Shillong, Khyndai Lad.

The Anti Narcotic task Force (ANTF) raided Ria Hotel at Police Bazar and nabbed a duo – Mohamman Azan Khan and Hanifa Bibi – from the hotel. Upon being interrogated, the duo spilled the beans. Apparently, the pills were being stored in the house of an accomplice, Mohammad Samir Khan. Police recovered 2.9 kilos of the substance worth Rs.2.9 crores, from the location. All of the 3 peddlers have been booked under Section 22 (C) and Section 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
