The Bethany Hospital, Shillong, Meghalaya has been reopened for the general public on May 23rd, 2020 after a month of closure following the detection of the first confirmed COVID-19 case in the state.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited the hospital and paid tribute to Dr. Sailo, the founder of Bethany Hospital Shillong, and joined the family in prayers.

“I thank the entire Bethany Hospital team who responded to the pressure in a positive and cooperative manner. I also thank the network and the community who supported the Government and Bethany Hospital during the time,” said Conrad K. Sangma.

He said that the biggest tribute to Dr. Sailo will be for the team to continue with the good work and fulfil his vision for the people.

Meghalaya increases COVID-19 testing capacity

Meghalaya has increased its COVID-19 testing capacity to 400 per day with the installation of a new RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) machine at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).

Meghalaya has Assam to fight against the COVID-19 by supporting with 5000 Viral Test Media, CM Sangma said. “We have enough VTMs in our stock to test all those coming from outside Northeast,” he added.

COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya

Meghalaya has registered a total of 14 confirmed coronavirus cases and one death so far.

Earlier, the state reported 13 COVID-19 positive cases after a reputed Shillong-based doctor tested COVID-19 positive and later died of the viral infection. He is the lone COVID-19 related fatality in the state. While 12 of the late doctor’s relatives, employees, and friends had contracted SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, from him.  With the new case, the state has registered 14 confirmed coronavirus cases so far.

In Northeast

The novel coronavirus has infected a total of 266 people and claimed four in Assam which is the highest among the Northeastern states. Assam is followed by Tripura with 173 cases and Manipur 26 cases. However, Sikkim has not reported any case so far.
