Shillong, June 20, 2019:

A local newspaper had carried a story saying that Meghalaya Chief Minister has assured to hike the salary of 'Adhoc' teachers, but a spokesman for the Chief Minister has said that this is not correct. The spokesperson has also said that the the Teachers Association met him at his residence and Chief Minister said that their request will be 'examined'.

The association is seeking hike in salary and demanding for basic salary and DA similar to Government school teachers.

The spokesman to the Chief Minister also said that this is not a correct portrayal by the media.

It may be mentioned that it had been reported that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma promised to enhance salary of all adhoc teachers of Meghalaya.

The Federation of Meghalaya Adhoc Secondary Teachers Association (FAMASTA) along with the All Meghalaya Adhoc Upper Primary School Teachers Association (AMAUPSTA) had met the chief minister at his residence on Tuesday.

In the meeting, Sangma said the state is facing financial constraint so it is not possible to upgrade all adhoc schools from Primary to Higher Secondary as the expenditure will be more that Rs 700 crore monthly.

But it was reported that he had assured 'salary increment' to the adhoc school teachers, but this was later denied by sources close to the Chief Minister.

It may be mentioned that the government of Meghalaya has been directed by the Centre to take action on the demand for upgrade of over 1800 ad hoc schools in the state to deficit system and equal pay for equal work.

This directive has come in the wake of a recent memorandum submitted by the Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers’ Association (MUPSTA) to Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment Ramdas Athawale for his intervention.
