MEGHALAYA: HOME MINISTER TO RESTORE NORMALCY AND PEACE IN SHILLONGcurfew

Curfew was imposed in areas under Lumdiengjri police station and Cantonment Beat House from 4 am on 1st June in view of the breakdown of law and order in Motphran, Mawkhar and adjoining areas following 31st May clash. The Shillong city as instances of violence on May 31st marred the peace and stability of the city. In view of this incident, Meghalaya Home Minister James K Sangma has assured that the Government is working towards restoring normalcy and peace.

Adressing to the media persons after the meeting conveyed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to assess the law and order situation in Shillong on 1st June, Home minister James K Sangma said “We are trying our best to ensure that normalcy is restored”.

He also informed that they have asked Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills to call a meeting with senior citizens, NGOs and other leaders to talk about how to resolve the issue.

“I would like appeal to all the members of the public to maintain calm and restrain,” Home Minister said.

Sangma also said that the situation have aggravated after reports which are very false in nature about people having been killed in the incident.

“I would also like to appeal the people to restrain themselves from spreading such kind of reports and also not paying heed to such kind of false report,” he said.

When asked if the Government would bring more forces, he said that the matter has been deliberated on this meeting and more force would be brought in the field.

The Home Minister also confirmed that all the 3G and 4G services have been asked to stop to prevent spreading of false news through social media.

When asked if he suspected any political conspiracy behind this incident, he said that he would not like to speculate anything on this.

Meanwhile the KSU also held an emergency meeting on 1st June in this regard whereby they have asked the government to arrest the trouble mongers responsible for creating chaos in the area and also demanded that those injured in the violence be compensated.
