Meghalaya: MeECL employees threaten agitation over non-payment of salaries

SHILLONG: Employees of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) have threatened to stage a protest and go for a ‘total shutdown’ on January 22, 2021, if the state government fails to clear their pending salaries.

The employees would launch a series of protests against non-receipt of salaries. This was one of the resolutions adopted at the general meeting of the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL (Employees) Associations and Unions (CCORMAU) held in front of the MeECL office at Lumjingshai here on Friday.

The decision was also taken following the failure of the MeECL management to comply with their demands.

The nine point charter of demands include disbursement of salary for the month of October on or before December 4, salary for month of November on or before December 10, salaries of all subsequent months on or prior to the 5th of every month, arrears due to the employees arising of ROP 2015, including those due to contractual employees be cleared within December 31, TA, DA, medical reimbursement, transfer grant, all allowances be cleared within March 31, next years and others.

At the end of the meeting, chairman of the committee, PK Shullet announced a series of agitational programmes which will begin from December 15.

“We have decided to stage a pen down strike on December 15 to be followed by a two-day hunger strike on December 16 and 17,” Shullet said.

“Again, if the management continues to be adamant, we will call for a total suspension of the maintenance work on December 21,” he said.

Shullet said the agitation will again resume on January 12, next year in which all employees will take mass casual leave besides marching to the secretariat.

“We will also launch a total non-cooperation movement on January 18 to be followed by a total shutdown on January 22. After this, the non-cooperation movement will continue till the committee sits again to chalk out its future course of action,” he said.
