SHILLONG: The West Garo Hills district police of Meghalaya extended an apology along with paying compensation to an elderly vegetable vendor whose goods were vandalized by a district police personnel.
According to the District Administration, the incident took place in Tura on Friday when the police personnel vandalized the shop of the vegetable vendor. Reportedly, most of her vegetables were destroyed.
After the incident, the district administration directed the police personnel to apologize & reimburse the cost of vegetable scattered and to ‘keep in mind the situation of marginalized section of society while dealing with the public’.

“Suitable action shall be initiated against police personnel involved and sensitization briefing shall also be done”, it added.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma too directed the DC and SP of West Garo hills to take immediate action against those responsible and to compensate the concerned individual.
The district administration further increased the market timings till 4pm.
After receiving the information of the apology being extended and compensation paid, the Chief Minister said, “It is not always easy, but as administration and law enforcement agencies we need to enforce the law, but we must also have compassion and empathy to the people and citizens of our state for whom we are all working together. Congratulate the police force for their prompt response.”
