Celebrations are already underway after UDP (United Democratic Party) candidate Balajied Synrem has opened up a seemingly unassailable lead in the Shella Assembly Constituency by-poll in Meghalaya.
Supporters of the UDP turned up in huge numbers to sing, dance and cheer for their 8,641 votes, whereas his nearest rival, Grace Mary Kharpuri, has received 3,965 votes.

It maybe mentioned here that the UDP candidate, who is also the son of departed UDP leader Donkupar Roy, is also being supported by the ruling National People's Party (NPP), who have not fielded any candidates.
In fact, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has also declared that the upcoming bye-polls in the State shall serve as a tribute to the departed former Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly, Dr. Donkupar Roy.

The electioneering ahead of the polls saw the Chief Minister, along with other members of the party, campaigning for the consensus candidate in various places across the Shella Assembly Constituency.
“We’re closer to the bye-elections for Shella Assembly Constituency. May we choose leaders as committed as Bah Don to take forward our vision for Meghalaya”, Sangma stated, in a tweet.
It may be mentioned that counting on in nine Assembly Constituencies across the Northeast.
