The proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has landed the BJP in an awkward spot as they are losing supporters en masse in the North East. Although NEDA Chief had proclaimed confidently that the North East is ruled by either the BJP or its allies, the BJP’s situation in the region is far more complicated, with many of its allies now starting to speak out against the Bill which is seen as a threat to indigenous people by many.
In view of all that has been going on, it comes as no surprise that Ataur Rahman Ahmed, West Garo Hills, BJYM President has also resigned from the party. This come days after Sofior Rahman, former state president of the minority morcha and an MDC, had also tendered his resignation.
Ahmed has resigned as a sign of protest against the Bill being passed in the Lok Sabha.
In a letter sent to BJP state President Shibun Lyngdoh, Ahmed stated that “the Bill is totally against the people of Meghalaya and the BJP as a whole.”
Apart from Ahmed, Bhabani Koch, President of BJP, Dalu Mandal Committee, West Garo Hills has also resigned.
