Operations by the NDRF and others were on to rescue 13 people feared dead in a coal mine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills.
According to reports, the workers in the Lomtharee mine were trapped due to overflowing of water inside the mine since they entered the mine on Thursday morning.
Illegal coal mines, nicknamed ‘killer mines’, have seen a spate of similar incidents over a period of several years in which numerous people lost their lives. Several authorities are said to be headed to the spot to assess the situation.
It may be mentioned that the National Green Tribunal enforced a ban on coal mining in Meghalaya in 2014.
