Taken aback by the security breach in the secretariat complex here by Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) activists on Friday, the police have upped security arrangement in Meghalaya’s seat of power.
The HYC activists had on Friday morning managed to enter secretariat complex and displayed placards demanding Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya and update of National Register of Citizens, before being removed by the police.
Following the incident, East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Davis Marak said security would be further tightened near the secretariat. All visitors would henceforth have to show their identity cards or pass for entering the secretariat, except ministers, MLAs and senior government officials.
The police have also written to the magistrate to impose Section 144 CrPC in and around the secretariat.
In fact, this was the second instance of security breach at the secretariat. A group of hawkers had on 4th June entered the complex after managing to break open a lock of the entrance gate.
