In a highly surprising turn of events, BJP’s candidate for Shillong Lok Sabha Constituency, Sanbor Shullai, on Thursday threatened to commit suicide if the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is enacted.
“Until Sanbor Shullai is alive, the CAB will not be implemented. I’ll kill myself, I’ll commit suicide before Narendra Modi if the Bill is implemented. But I’ll not let the CAB to be passed. I’ll request Narendra Modi and I’ll fight against it,” said Shullai while addressing the media.
On the same day in Silchar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the NDA-led Government is committed to enacting the Bill if it is voted to power yet again. However, Modi also stated that the Bill would only be implemented after consultations and discussions with people from all strata of society in the North-East.
Voting for the two Lok Sabha seats in Meghalaya, Tura and Shillong was held today during the first phase of voting. Apart from Shullai, the other candidates in fray for the Shillong seat are Vincent Pala from Congress and Jemino Mawthoh from the UDP.
