With a large influx of travellers expected from Guwahati and other parts of the Northeast for New Year celebrations, the Shillong Police have announced traffic restrictions in the city’s Khyndailad area, including the busy Police Bazaar, and urged visitors to plan their journeys in advance.

Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the Khyndailad area will be declared a no-entry zone for vehicles from 5 pm on December 31 in view of the heavy public turnout anticipated to welcome the New Year. He said the measures are aimed at easing congestion and ensuring public safety during peak celebration hours.

Vehicular movement towards Police Bazaar will be prohibited, with traffic being diverted at Kachari Point towards Raj Bhawan Junction.

Vehicles approaching from Umsohsun Junction along GS Road will be diverted towards Boucher Road and Motphran. Parking will be permitted only on one side of the road along select stretches, including the Centenary Junction to Rap’s Mansion Junction and from Pinewood Junction to the Botanical Garden.

Given Shillong’s popularity among Guwahati residents as a preferred New Year’s Eve destination, police have advised travellers to avoid peak hours, use alternative routes and opt for park-and-walk arrangements while entering the city.
Emergency service vehicles will be allowed and facilitated during the restrictions, the SP added.

The advisory comes as Shillong continues to draw large crowds, with the Khyndailad area illuminated since Christmas and churches, major intersections and public spaces across the city decorated for the festive season, adding to the New Year’s Eve footfall.
