Meghalaya swimming gains momentum as over 100 athletes compete in 19th State Swimming Championship

More than 100 swimmers from across Meghalaya participated in the 19th Meghalaya State Swimming Championship 2026, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport in the state.

 

Organised by the Meghalaya Swimming Association (MSA), the championship concluded with competitions across multiple age categories, where swimmers battled for top honours. Several participants delivered standout performances, with winners receiving gold, silver and bronze medals during the closing ceremony.

 

Speaking at the event, Assistant Director of the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Meghalaya, PB War Nongbri said the steady rise in participation at the state championship indicated that swimming was gaining momentum across Meghalaya. He said such tournaments play a key role in identifying young talent and providing athletes with opportunities to progress to higher levels of competition.

 

Nongbri expressed confidence that the championship would encourage more young swimmers to represent Meghalaya at regional and national events in the coming years.

 

The Meghalaya Swimming Association said the annual championship has become an important platform for emerging swimmers to showcase their abilities while preparing for more competitive tournaments. It added that the increasing number of participants highlights the steady growth of swimming in the state and the rising interest among young athletes.
