The Watershed Yatra, a nationwide initiative advocating for sustainable watershed management, reached Ganchikalak Secondary School, engaging students and faculty in a series of interactive activities focused on environmental conservation.
The program commenced with an inaugural ceremony, graced by MLA of 59 Chokpot LAC, Sengchim N Sangma, who also serves as the MDC of Chokpot GHADC, as the Chief Guest. The event saw the presence of Former MDC Willy D Shira, Wennison Ch Marak, Shri Pittingson R Marak (ADC, South Garo Hills), SDO of Chokpot Civil Sub-Division, Dr. Merril N Sangma (President, GHEPS), K C Momin (Advisor, GHEPS), John Oswin S Momin (Divisional Soil & Water Conservation, Baghmara South Garo Hills), along with Nokmas, Sordars, teachers, and students.
The event featured interactive sessions, educating students on watershed conservation and sustainable resource management. Additionally, a short skit highlighting the role of watershed management in environmental preservation and sustainable livelihoods captivated the audience.
A series of competitions, including essay writing, drawing, and painting on the theme "Importance of Natural Resource Management", encouraged students to express their perspectives on conservation.
To further emphasize the cause, a tree plantation drive was conducted, where dignitaries, students, and staff participated in planting saplings to reinforce the message of environmental sustainability.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Sengchim N Sangma stated, "The Watershed Yatra aims to inspire a sense of responsibility among our youth towards preserving our natural resources."
The Watershed Yatra is committed to fostering community-led sustainable watershed management practices, enhancing rural livelihoods, and contributing to a healthier ecosystem. Through education and active participation, the initiative seeks to empower communities to take ownership of their natural resources, ensuring long-term sustainability.
