The Dadenggre block in West Garo Hills successfully hosted the first edition of BAKRIM 2025, an inter-village championship aimed at promoting rural development, increasing awareness of government schemes, and fostering community participation. The event, which began on 10th March, concluded with a grand closing ceremony on 19th March, leaving behind a strong sense of hope and progress among the people.
The closing ceremony witnessed the presence of DC West Garo Hills, Jagdish Chelani, as the chief guest, alongside SDO (Civil) Dadenggre, Aditya Verma, and other dignitaries. The initiative saw active participation from 99 Village Employment Council (VEC) villages under the Dadenggre block.
Highlighting the event’s vision, Chaitanya Awasthi, BDO of Dadenggre C&RD Block, explained that BAKRIM 2025 was not just about competition but also about measuring villages' progress in implementing government schemes such as MNREGA, PMAY, NSAP, health, education, and agriculture. The goal was to create a healthy competitive environment, encouraging villages to excel in various aspects of development.
Additionally, cultural and sports events such as dance, music, painting, tug-of-war, volleyball, and other activities were organized to engage the community holistically. The initiative also facilitated government scheme enrollment, receiving over 900 applications for various schemes within just two days.
The Tokay Gecko, native to the Garo Hills, was chosen as the mascot for BAKRIM 2025 to spread awareness about environmental conservation. BDO Awasthi shared his inspiration, stating that the gecko symbolizes the delicate balance of nature, and its inclusion in the event served as a reminder of ecological responsibility.
A significant highlight of BAKRIM 2025 was the Self-Sustained Village Economy Experiment, where local entrepreneurs and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) showcased their products. The response was overwhelming, with all stalls selling out before the event ended, demonstrating the potential for local economic growth. The exhibition included handicrafts, crochet, fresh produce, juices, food stalls, and agricultural auctions.
BDO Awasthi introduced a Best Produce Stall concept, inspired by Western festivals, where farmers auctioned their largest and best-quality agricultural produce. The initiative successfully attracted buyers, highlighting the quality and freshness of locally grown items.
In a unique initiative, BAKRIM 2025 celebrated the longest-living individuals in the region, emphasizing the value of traditional lifestyles. The 104-year-old award recipient highlighted the importance of indigenous knowledge in maintaining health and well-being. DC Jagdish Chelani praised these individuals as ambassadors of healthy living, showcasing the benefits of a natural, plastic-free lifestyle.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, DC Jagdish Chelani commended the vision and execution of the event by BDO Awasthi and his team, stating, "BAKRIM is a remarkable initiative that celebrates government schemes with the people. This is just the beginning, and I believe it will grow bigger in the coming years."
