Meghalaya's women farmers drive global push for state's premium agro-products

Women farmers in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district are playing an increasingly significant role in strengthening the state's rural economy by working alongside their male counterparts to promote locally grown agricultural produce in domestic and international markets.

From premium pineapples and Khasi mandarins to ginger and black pepper, women cultivators are helping build a distinct identity for Meghalaya's horticultural products while enhancing income opportunities for farming communities.

Meghalaya has emerged as one of India's leading producers of premium-quality pineapples, with cultivation spread across the rain-fed hills and valleys of Ri-Bhoi, Garo Hills, and parts of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

Pineapple cultivation supports the livelihoods of thousands of farming households and remains a key contributor to the state's horticulture sector. Farmers and officials say growing efforts to improve quality, branding and market access are helping position Meghalaya's produce in wider national and global markets.

The increasing participation of women in cultivation, harvesting, post-harvest management and marketing is also contributing to the growth of the state's agri-economy and expanding opportunities for rural communities.
