Retired HC Judge BR Kataky inspects illegal coal mining hotspots in Meghalaya's mining belt

Retired High Court judge, B.R. Kataky, conducted an extensive inspection across coal-mining regions of West Khasi Hills and Garo Hills on Wednesday, April 8, reviewing enforcement mechanisms aimed at curbing illegal coal mining and transportation in Meghalaya.

The visit focused on assessing the operational efficiency of Smart Coal Gates, transport check posts, and coal loading systems, with an emphasis on ensuring strict adherence to regulatory protocols. The inspection formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight and dismantle illegal mining networks in the state.

During the visit, Kataky inspected key locations including Hatiabari in West Khasi Hills, where he carried out an on-ground assessment of mining-related activities. He also issued specific recommendations to officials of the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) to enhance monitoring systems and plug enforcement gaps.

In North Garo Hills, Kataky reviewed the functioning of Smart Coal Gates at Sarangma, alongside transport check posts, to evaluate their effectiveness in tracking coal movement. He further visited Mendipathar Railway Station, a major coal loading point, where he examined operational procedures and compliance with transportation norms.

A detailed review meeting was held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner in North Garo Hills, attended by Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from coal-mining districts across the Garo Hills region. The meeting focused on coordinated strategies to curb illegal mining and transportation activities, with officials deliberating on strengthening surveillance and enforcement mechanisms.

The visit concluded with a high-level coordination meeting involving district administrations from Baghmara, Williamnagar, and North Garo Hills. The discussions underscored the need for inter-district coordination and stricter enforcement measures to address persistent violations.

Kataky stated that firm action would be taken to prevent unlawful coal-related activities and emphasized the importance of sustained monitoring to ensure compliance. The directives issued during the visit signal a renewed push by authorities to tighten regulatory control over coal mining and transportation in Meghalaya.
