Three arrested after youth beaten to death in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has condemned the brutal killing of a youth in West Garo Hills, promising strict action against the perpetrators while urging citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony.

The incident occurred around 2 pm on January 9 at Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station, where Dilseng M. Sangma, son of Gaban Ch. Marak of Amokgre village in the Phulbari area, was assaulted by unidentified assailants.

The victim was initially taken to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura for advanced treatment but succumbed to his injuries en route, raising serious concerns over law and order in the district.

Speaking on the incident, CM Sangma said, “Yesterday, there was a very tragic and unfortunate incident in Garo Hills, where one youth lost his life and another was seriously injured. We condemn this act and express our condolences to the bereaved family.” He added that the administration and police are fully engaged, assuring that “all those involved in this heinous crime will be brought to justice.”

Following the attack, the West Garo Hills Police conducted multiple raids, arresting three individuals, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects. The Deputy Commissioner convened a meeting with civil society representatives to form a peace committee and discuss measures to maintain communal harmony in the district.

The district administration also held an emergency review meeting late Friday night at the Superintendent of Police’s office in West Garo Hills. Senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent and Additional Superintendent of Police, Circle Inspector, and representatives of the ACHIK NGO, reviewed the security situation, assessed the progress of the investigation, and discussed immediate steps to ensure public safety.

Authorities have indicated that preventive measures, including a potential night curfew and temporary suspension of internet services, are under consideration to prevent unrest. Officials have reiterated their commitment to a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation, emphasising that strict action will be taken against all involved.

CM Sangma also urged citizens to be cautious of rumours circulating on social media and rely only on verified information from official sources while the investigation proceeds.
