Villagers catch suspected Bangladeshi intruder in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills, hand him over to police
Villagers of Gandibor Songona in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district allegedly apprehended a Bangladeshi national suspected of crossing into Indian territory and attempting theft before handing him over to Gasuapara Police, according to local sources.
According to villagers, a group of suspected Bangladeshi nationals allegedly crossed the international border with the intention of stealing cattle and committing dacoity. Villagers managed to catch one person, while the others reportedly escaped.
Residents said the border areas, including Minenggre village, have witnessed repeated alleged incursions and thefts. Following the latest incident, villagers reportedly lodged an FIR at Gasuapara Police Station against the apprehended person.
A similar incident was reported on October 3, when villagers allegedly caught one person from a group suspected of entering the area to commit dacoity, the villagers said.
Residents have also submitted a complaint to the Border Security Force (BSF), naming the 50th and 100th Battalions at the Gasuapara Border Outposts, seeking stronger patrolling and security along the India-Bangladesh border.
Villagers expressed concern over their safety, alleging that repeated complaints had not resulted in effective measures. They said incidents of cattle, utensils and motorcycles being stolen from homes had contributed to fear and insecurity among border residents.
The villagers have appealed to the Meghalaya government to take immediate steps to strengthen security and protect people living along the international border.
Police confirmation and the apprehended person’s identity were not available in the information provided.
