Young innovators showcase talent at Shillong’s STEM Fusion 2025

The spirit of innovation came alive in Shillong as students from across Meghalaya showcased their creativity and scientific acumen at STEM Fusion 2025: Workshop and Student Exhibition, hosted at the State Convention Centre on Monday.

Organised by the North East Centre for Technology Application and Research (NECTAR)—an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India—in collaboration with the Smart Village Movement (SVM) and IISER Pune, the event witnessed the participation of over 400 students and 80 teachers. Together, they presented 95 innovative projects, each highlighting the ingenuity and problem-solving abilities of young minds.

The open-format exhibition encouraged students to address real-world challenges through scientific solutions while fuelling curiosity and a passion for research. With technology-driven industries emerging as a vital force in Meghalaya’s economy, the initiative underscored the importance of strengthening STEM education to equip students with future-ready skills and boost local employment opportunities.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who attended as Chief Guest, lauded the participants and emphasised the role of innovation in shaping Meghalaya’s future. He noted that the state government remains committed to fostering platforms that nurture young talent.

Dr. Arun Kumar Sarma, Director General of NECTAR, also highlighted the significance of such initiatives, stressing that STEM education serves as a foundation for creating innovators who can contribute to national development.

The competition was structured into three categories—Grades 3–9, Grades 10–12, and Undergraduate/Postgraduate—with winners receiving special prizes.

Adding to the vibrancy of the event were expert-led sessions by IISER Pune, covering STEM Science Activities, Math & Logic Fun, and Engineering & Technology modules. Students also engaged in a machine learning games workshop conducted by Dr. S. Muthukumaran of NIT Tiruchirappalli and a drone awareness session organised by NECTAR.

The exhibition was graced by several dignitaries, including Sampath Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary & Development Commissioner, Government of Meghalaya; Banteilang Kharshandi, MCS, Director, Directorate of School Education & Literacy; Vivek Shah, Vice-Chairman, Smart Village Movement; Dr. Collin Z. Renthlei, Advisor (Technical), NECTAR; and representatives from academic institutions and technology organisations. Professors from NEHU’s School of Technology served as judges for the exhibition.
