Coronavirus: Mizoram Govt Closes all Educational Institutions & Select Public Spaces

Tripura doctor’s body urges to shift asymptomatic cases to Bhagat Singh COVID centre

Aizawl, March 17, 2020:

Mizoram Government has directed to closed down all the educational institutions and public places such as gymnasiums, picnic spots, cinema halls and swimming pools till March 31 in view of the pandemic coronavirus (COVID-19).

Mizoram Health Minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana on Monday chaired a meeting of the Health & Family Welfare Board where a decision to close all educational institutes and public places such as gymnasiums, picnic spots, cinema halls and swimming pools with effect from Tuesday till the March 31 was taken in view of the pandemic COVID-19.

The meeting decided to invoke provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 (Act No. 3 of 1897) and also consulted Chief Minister Zoramthanga to take the decision to close all universities, colleges, schools, Anganwadis and pre-schools till March 31.

However, the ongoing examinations and evaluations will not be affected by this decision. The meeting decided that the directive issued would be revised as and when necessary, taking into account prevailing conditions.

Government offices, church and private hospitals have been asked to continue restrictions on visitors. The meeting also appealed to the public to stay away from large public gatherings.

Correctional homes and other such residential institutions have been asked to refrain from entertaining any outside visitors. Any new admission to such homes and institutions must be medically screened carefully, directed the State Government.

The meeting also appealed to all Churches through the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitu Committee (MKHC), the umbrella body of various Christian denominations in Mizoram, for spreading awareness about preventive measures in view of the global COVID-19 outbreak on March 22.

It may be mentioned here that India has recorded a total of 125 confirmed cases of coronavirus according to https://www.worldometers.info/ On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did a video call with leaders of SAARC nations to discuss the Coronavirus outbreak and steps to control the spread of the deadly disease.

Internationally, there have been 7,174 deaths due to the coronavirus, with cases being reported from as many as 125 countries. In Italy, the virus has taken on catastrophic proportions with as many as 2,158 people having died due to the infection. China, the epicentre of the disease, still reports the highest number of deaths at 3,226. Iran is the third-worst hit country and 853 Iranians have died to to a coronavirus infection. The casualty also continues to mount in the United States of America, that has seen as many as 93 people die in the wake of the outbreak of the life-threatening virus.
