COVID-19: 7-day lockdown imposed in Aizawl from today to break the chain of transmission

Aizawl: The Mizoram Government has announced that there will be a week-long lockdown in the Aizawl Municipal area to arrest the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The Mizoram government on Monday also launched 'Covid-19 No Tolerance Fortnight' across the state till November 9, a notification said.

The lockdown will begin at 4 am on October 27 and will be withdrawn at the same time on November 3, the statement said.

In a related development, the Mizoram government on Monday decided to set up child-friendly Covid-19 care centres to treat children, who tested positive for COVID-19.

At least 295 children and youths below 18 years of age have so far tested positive, a statement said. Of those who tested positive, four children were below two years of age.

According to reports, decision to impose the lockdown in Aizawl was taken at an emergency meeting of health officials, doctors, churches and NGOs and approved by Chief Minister Zoramthanga. The high-level meeting was chaired by health minister R Lalthangliana.

Taking to Twitter earlier today, Zoramthanga wrote, "State Government proposes to impose temporary restrictions on movement of the public within Aizawl municipal area for 7 days to break the chain of transmission and also to facilitate intensive contact tracing, surveillance and testing."
The airport and entry points through land route will remain open to passenger traffic and all goods transport vehicles to and from Mizoram will operate as usual, he informed via another tweet.

At least 160 COVID-19 cases were detected from 45 out of the total 83 local councils in the AMC area since October 18.

While 15 percent of patients who tested positive for COVID-19 before October had developed symptoms of the virus, while at least 33 percent who tested positive for the virus since October were symptomatic, he said.
