ELECTION COMMISSION TO REPLACE MIZORAM CEO

Guwahati, November 10, 2018:

The Election Commission on Saturday announced its decision to replace Mizoram's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) SB Shashank following massive protests by NGO and activists of rights groups in Aizawl earlier this week, demanding his ouster.

The decision was taken by the poll panel following a key meet. The poll panel had summoned the CEO, whose removal has been demanded by the chief minister and several NGOs, on Wednesday.

The EC earlier held a meeting following which the Commission had decided to call for a panel of names from Chief Secretary of Mizoram for a panel of names for the post of State Chief Electoral Officer.

A high-level team of the poll panel met representatives of civil society groups to resolve the matter, ahead of Mizoram assembly elections, scheduled to be held on November 28.
