The only surviving member of Subhash Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army (INA) from Mizoram, Darthawma, has passed away. Reportedly, he died of multi-organ failure at

Lunglei in South Mizoram on Sunday. He was 99.

The last rites of the freedom fighter were performed at Lunglei.

Representatives from the district administration, Army, paramilitary forces, non-governmental organizations, and Ex-Servicemen attended the funeral.

Darthawma left behind six children, 19 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

The Indian National Army member from Mizoram had joined the Army Medical Corps of the British Indian Army on November 27, 1940, during World War 2. He was also captured by the Japanese Imperial Army in early 1942 during his posting at Penang Island in Malaysia.

In May 1942, he had joined the INA to fight against the British colonial rule. He was captured by the British in 1944 two years after joining the INA but was released from Lucknow Jail on January 15, 1945, after Mahatma Gandhi’s intervention.

He was awarded the ‘Tamrapatra Award’ in 1972 by the Government of India for his role in the struggle for Indian independence.
