AIZAWL: The historic Mizoram Peace accord marked the end of insurgency and violence in the state of Mizoram. The agreement was signed between the government of India and Mizo National Front on June 30, 1986.

The day created history for years to follow and still remain of the most of most successful pacts as stated by Chief Minister Zoramthanga himself.

The state was dipped was political insurgency and social unrest due to MNF’s protest against the state government which brewed for not getting support from the government due to the great famine in the late 1950s.

Displaying protest against the government, the MNF gave birth to its armed wing Mizo National Army and declared independence from India which was followed several attacks on government buildings.

The negotiations were made considering the suffering that the civilians were going through.

The first crucial communication took place in 1974 between MNF and the state government Laldenga submitted his terms to then Prime Minister India Gandhi.

The unrest reigned in the state for decades which finally ended with signing of the accord in 1986.

With Rajiv Gandhi coming into power, the focus shifted on national harmony. Necessary steps were taken and an agreement document for MNF was prepared. However, Laldenga's objection towards certain terms as some of his demands were not feasible for the Gandhi     government. After several disagreements MNF finally surrendered all their arms, ammunition and equipment to the government with Laldenga as the first Chief Minister

Till date, the Mizo accord is considered as the most successful agreement in India post independence.

Recalling the iconic agreement, Mizoram CM said, "The most successful Peace Accord was signed 35-years-ago on this day, making Mizoram one of the most peaceful states, since then. Let the Peace we enjoy today be a reminder of the past sacrifices & commitment of the Mizo people."
