Every year on June 15th the state celebrates YMA Day, a regional public holiday. This holiday honours the founding of a significant voluntary organisation in the state on this date in 1935.

The Young Mizo Association (YMA) is the Mizo people's largest and most comprehensive non-profit, secular, nongovernmental organisation.

It was founded by Welsh Christian missionaries who recognised the importance of cultural preservation for the Mizo tribe, who were facing political and social modernization. On 14 May 1977, it was registered with the Government of Mizoram as SR No. 4 of 1977 under the Indian Societies Registration Act (XXI of 1860).

The organisation is led by a central committee (Central YMA), based in Aizawl, with 5 sub-headquarters, 47 groups and 805 branches covering all of Mizoram as well as parts of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura. The Association presently has 404722 members (247467 males and 157255 females).
