Mizoram facing financial crunch due to COVID-19: CM Zoramthanga

AIZAWL: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Friday said that the state is going through financial crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic along with other issues including the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).

In a statement, the Chief Minister stated that the outbreak of COVID-19 proved to be a big blow to the state’s economy. The state’s share of taxes has significantly reduced due to the drop in the quantum of revenue collection at the Centre.

He further informed that state's share of taxes has dropped by Rs 1,500 crore during the fiscal 2020-2021.

Repayment of the state’s liabilities amounting to Rs 150 crore heightened the crisis, added the Chief Minister.

Expressing regret, the Chief Minister said that the government is not able to execute any new developmental projects due to the current financial situation.

Explaining the situation the Chief Minister said that the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF), a massive wildfire in different parts of the state, along with influx of people from Myanmar due to military coup have all added to the misery of the state.

He further thanked the people of his state for their cooperation and support in their battle against COVID-19.

Mizoram currently stands at 2758 active cases of COVID-19. The state has recorded a total of 11382 cases so far with 8691 recoveries. A total of 36 people died of COVID-19 in the state which is the lowest COVID death toll among the Northeastern states.
