Guwahati, January 26, 2019:

Republic Day celebrations is Mizoram have been affected by the ever-intensifying protests against the highly controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

The call to boycott Republic Day was given by the NGO Coordination Committee, an organization of civil society groups and student bodies. The organizations have called a bandh and many Mizo youth organizations have been demanding separation from India and some Mizoram citizens have also shown a desire to become a part of China.

In a strange ceremony held at capital Aizawl, Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan addressed an almost empty ground as no members of the general audience attended the function and only ministers and top officials were present.

Protestors of the Bill carried placards outside the venue, but no untoward incidents were reported.
