Mizoram Govt. Proposes to Build ‘Border Haats’ to Improve Trade Ties with Myanmar

Aizawl, August 21, 2019:

The Mizoram government has proposed to build ‘Border Haats’ (markets) four of its towns to boost local trade with neighboring nation Myanmar.

The Central government is likely to aid the project for the improvement of the local people living in the border-area towns.

Mizoram Commerce and Industries Minister R. Lalthangliana said that four places had been identified to set up the ‘Border Haats’ -  Hnahlan, Zote, Vaphai (Saikhumphai) and Sangau (Pangkhua) in southeastern Mizoram. It is to be noted that officials from Mizoram as well as Myanmar had led a joint survey to identify these locations.

The Mizoram state government has submitted detailed proposals in this matter to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for its approval. Once approved, the government will be able to seek funds to build the markets from the Union Industries and Commerce Ministry.

'Border Haats' are set up with the motive of promoting trade between two countries. In India, there are currently four operational border markets in Meghalaya and Tripura. The new set of markets has been proposed to benefit the local people in their businesses.

The Union Industries and Commerce Ministry has been spending, on an average, Rs 3.5 crore to develop the infrastructure for the 'Border Haats' in India along the Bangladesh border.

Mizoram government has been working on strengthening its ties with neighboring Myanmar over the past few months. Recently, the Mizoram Government had proposed to set up an e-Visa centre in Champai, a border town near Myanmar, to facilitate issuing of visas online for entry into the country.

It was proposed with the motive to ease the process of visa application so that people wanting to travel to Myanmar for business or other travel purposes, would be able to apply for Visas online.
