Aizawl, February 2, 2020:

The Election Department of Mizoram has removed the names of more than 11,000 Brus from its Voters’ List and kept only 1,168 of the ones who returned to Mizoram recently.

This move of the Mizoram government has left the Brus with no voting rights as Tripura, wherein the Brus will be rehabilitated, have taken no step as yet to enlist them in its Voters’ List.

Uncertainty prevails as despite the recently inked quadripartite agreement. It is yet to be clear as to where they will be rehabilitated and under which constituency their names will be enlisted. The Brus have been demanding resettlement in their current areas of residence. However, Kanchanpur Nagarik Manch, predominantly an organization of the local Bengalis and the Jampui Hills Mizo Convention are opposed to their demands.

Meanwhile, as per reports, the Tripura government has asked its District Magistrates to identify vacant lands to rehabilitate the Brus.
