The death toll in the railway bridge collapse incident in Sairang village in Mizoram has climbed to 22, as rescue operations persist in the aftermath of the disaster.
The incident unfolded on August 23 when a railway bridge under construction near Sairang village in Mizoram collapsed, claiming the lives of 18 workers and inflicting injuries on several others.
The mishap occurred around 9:30 AM. District officials, police personnel, and local authorities converged on the scene, joined by Quick Response Teams (QRT) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
As the rubble is carefully cleared and sections of the structure are methodically dismantled, hopes for further survivors are dwindling with the passage of time. Among the injured, two have been discharged after receiving medical attention.
Gas welding techniques were employed to carefully extract one body that was trapped under a heavy steel component.
From the realm of railway officials, RN Sunkar Member (Infrastructure), Railway Board, arrived at the site today to assess and address the unfolding tragedy.
