Mizoram conducts defence mock drill exercise across Aizawl

A comprehensive city-wide air raid civil defence mock drill was conducted in Aizawl on May 7, as part of a nationwide exercise initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The drill, aimed at assessing preparedness in the event of an aerial attack, took place between Civil Hospital Aizawl and the All India Radio (AIR) Station.

The exercise began at 11:00 am with a warning siren from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, followed by a simulated air raid at the AIR Station in Tuikhuahtlang.

Coordination efforts were led from a central Control Room set up at the Superintendent of Police's office, which oversaw evacuation and rescue operations.

Rescue teams, including personnel from Mizoram Home Guards and Civil Defence, as well as the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the Mizoram Armed Police, carried out rapid response operations. They evacuated mock survivors, while ambulances and fire service units responded swiftly to the scene. Traffic police and NCC cadets ensured smooth movement for emergency vehicles.

The drill scenario reported eight simulated casualties, including three fatalities. Two injured individuals were ‘transported’ by ambulance to Civil Hospital for treatment.

In a parallel awareness initiative, 15 high schools across Aizawl participated in disaster preparedness sessions conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

A second warning siren is scheduled for 6:30 pm, after which the city will observe a five-minute blackout as part of the ongoing simulation.
