Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga launches statewide anti-drug campaign

Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga on Monday, September 1 formally launched the campaign “Operation Against Trafficking and Use of Drugs and Narcotics in Mizoram” (locally known as Ruihhlo Dona Beihpui), aimed at curbing the rising menace of drug trafficking and abuse in the state.

Speaking at the launch event, Sapdanga said the growing drug problem poses a serious challenge to Mizoram’s social fabric and called for collective action. He stressed that the state government, in collaboration with the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), has resolved to take strong and sustained measures to combat the issue.

The campaign will run from September to December 2025 and is designed as a coordinated drive involving multiple stakeholders. A preparatory meeting held on August 7 with officials from the Home Department, Police, Excise & Narcotics Department, Special Intelligence Branch (SIB), and CYMA leaders identified 22 major entry points—mostly along the Myanmar border—used for drug trafficking.

From August 25 to 29, Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) along with CYMA teams conducted awareness programmes across Champhai district to mobilize community participation.

Sapdanga also led a delegation on August 30 to Bairabi, Vairengte, and other locations in Kolasib district, where meetings were held with local leaders to strengthen border vigilance.

Officials noted that despite regular seizures at entry points, drugs often re-enter Mizoram through other states, highlighting the need for closer coordination with neighbouring regions.

To support the campaign, the government has pledged financial resources and manpower. A special squad of 30 trained police personnel has been constituted to work alongside community leaders and YMA volunteers.

The launch event was attended by Excise & Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, senior Home Department officials, the IGP (Law & Order), Aizawl DC and SP, along with leaders of CYMA and the Excise & Narcotics Department.
