Mizoram kicks off two-day sports conclave in Aizawl

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday, June 13 inaugurated the two-day mega event of 'Mizoram Sports Conclave-Preparing Mizoram for Olympic Games, 2036’ at the Baptist Centre in Falkland, Aizawl.

The event is jointly organised by the Mizoram State Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports with sanction of Rs. 68,80,500 from the Scheme of Human Resources Development in Sports on February 2, 2024.

In his opening speech, the Chief Minister announced that "we will initiate steps to adopt Vision 2036 Olympics as a State Government policy,"  and expressed that this event marks the beginning of an ambitious journey towards realizing the dream of seeing Mizoram and India shine on the global stage at the 2036 Olympics.
Lalduhoma stated that Mizoram has a rich tradition of sports, which the community takes it up as a way of life, a way to bring social cohesion and promote unity, to celebrate victories together and to support each other through defeats. He added that sports in Mizoram is a source of pride that transcends ethnicity, race, religion, sex or social status. 

The Chief Minister emphasized that Mizoram has been actively implementing grassroots programs across various Olympic sports disciplines to identify and nurture young talents; and stands as a shining example of how a state with a small population can make big strides in sports through passion, dedication, and strategic development.

He also added that the State Government’s policy will include a process to adopt Vision 2036 Olympics. 

Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar stated that under the State Government’s Handholding policy, a programme has been devised to provide basic coaching to potential athletes in every village of the State, to identify and develop athletes with Olympic-level potentials, who will be provided advanced coaching and a platform to compete consistently, ensuring that athletes have a strong foundation from an early stage.

Hmar added that they plan to upgrade the capacity of coaches and mentors, and refresher courses will be organized at regular intervals to update coaches on the latest coaching techniques, strategies and practices, so they are fit to provide not only the highest level of physical skills and talent, but to provide mental strength in partnership with leading sports science and life coaching institutions.

The Sports Minister also spoke on the plans to development state-of-the-art infrastructures and facilities through funding from the Central government and partnerships with reliable corporates and PSUs through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.

The inaugural function was attended by Dr. Vanlalthlana, Minister, I&PR, Shri Shakliar Warjri, Sports Minister, Meghalaya, Smt. Nandita Garlosa, Assam Sports Minister, Dr. Lorrain Vanlalpeka Chinzah, Adviser to CM, Shri. Lalmuanpuia Poonte, Adviser to CM, Shri. Jeje Lalpekhlua, MLA, Dr. Renu Sharma, Chief Secretary, Shri. Kalyan Chaubey, CEO, Indian Olympic Association & President, AIFF, top officials from different sports association and promotion organisation.
