Mizoram LADC election: MNF secures eight seats, coalition with INC expected

The Mizo National Front (MNF) has emerged as the leading party in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) general election, winning eight constituencies and positioning itself to form a probable coalition government with its pre-poll partner, the Indian National Congress (INC).

The INC secured seven seats, giving the alliance a combined total of 15 in the 25-member council. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) finished with six seats, while the BJP and Independent candidates captured two seats each.

Vote counting began at 8:00 am at the Government Lawngtlai College Hall and concluded by 1:30pm. A total of 56,873 votes were cast, including 47,769 through EVMs and 453 postal ballots. Counting took place across three halls, operating 22 tables.

The election held on December 3 recorded an 83.99 per cent turnout. Sakeilui registered the highest participation at 94.59 per cent, while Lawngtlai–Chandmary had the lowest at 73.54 per cent. The LADC electorate comprises 27,854 men and 29,019 women.

Party representation in the contest varied, with the BJP fielding 10 candidates, the INC 14, the MNF 20 and the ZPM contesting all seats. Eleven Independents also participated.

Certificates of Election were handed to all winning candidates by Returning Officers Donny Lalruatsanga, David Lalrinawma and H. Zonunmawia. The current council term will expire on December 18, 2025.
