Mizoram: ZPM, MNF and Congress declare candidates for Lai Autonomous District Council Elections
Three major political parties in Mizoram, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Mizo National Front (MNF), and the Indian National Congress (INC), have officially announced their candidates for the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) polls scheduled to be held on December 3.
The ruling ZPM has released a complete list of candidates for all 25 constituencies, signifying its intent to make a full-scale contest across the district. Meanwhile, the opposition MNF has fielded candidates in 20 constituencies, while the Congress has named contenders for 10 constituencies in its first phase of announcements, with the rest to follow soon.
Currently, the MNF holds 13 seats in the existing LADC—comprising 11 elected and 2 nominated Members of District Council (MDCs)—and several of its sitting members are seeking re-election this time. The five-year term of the current MDCs will expire on December 18, 2025, necessitating the fresh electoral process.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), the LADC has 56,873 registered voters, including 27,854 men and 29,019 women. Among the constituencies, Sakeilui has the highest voter strength with 3,993 voters, while Cheural has the lowest, with 1,381 voters.
The election authority will set up 111 polling stations, of which four are classified as unmotorable — three accessible only by foot and one by boat. The Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect and will remain active until the completion of the election process on December 12, 2025.
