Quarry collapse in Mizoram kills Manipur worker, traps two others
A sudden quarry collapse at Sihphir Neihbawih in Mizoram on January 9 afternoon killed one worker and trapped two others under rubble, prompting swift rescue action by local villagers.
The accident struck at around 3:30 pm during operations at a quarry run by Pu Lalchangliana. Falling rocks buried workers without warning; while two managed to run, debris caught them mid-escape.
Muana, from Manipur, suffered fatal injuries and died despite hospital treatment. A second worker from the site receives care at Synod Hospital in Durtlang.
Debris also engulfed two non-Mizo labourers at an adjacent quarry owned by Rody Zothanmawia. Sihphir residents rushed to dig out the trapped men, with efforts continuing late into the evening.
Officials plan a site inspection to probe the cause of the collapse and review safety protocols at such high-risk operations.
