Road rage shooting in Aizawl's Bawngkawn: One arrested, victim stable

A late-night altercation between two motorists turned violent in Aizawl’s Bawngkawn locality on August 29, when a man allegedly opened fire, leaving one person injured.

According to a preliminary report from Bawngkawn Police Station, the incident occurred around 9:40 pm near Bawngkawn junction after the vehicles of the two men nearly collided. The quarrel escalated when Rochhingpuia (44), son of Haitinsanga of Bawngkawn Shalom Veng and originally from Champhai Kanan Veng, allegedly fired a .32 calibre Victor USA-made pistol at Lalhriatrenga Siakeng (21), son of Lalrawngbawla of Aizawl Zotlang. The bullet struck the victim in the chest.

Lalhriatrenga was rushed to Greenwood Hospital, where doctors said his condition is stable but under close observation.

Rochhingpuia was arrested soon after the incident, and a case of attempt to murder has been registered against him at Bawngkawn Police Station. He was produced in court and will be lodged at Central Jail.

The Zotlang YMA and local council have strongly condemned the attack, pledging full support to the victim’s father, Lalrawngbawla and his family.
