Vegetable vendors protest in Aizawl, demand dissolution of municipal body

Farmers and vegetable vendors at Aizawl’s Treasury Square, on June 21, staged a protest against the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), alleging mistreatment and unfair restrictions on their livelihood.

The protesters complained that they are permitted to sell their produce only once a week, and even then, they are forcibly removed from their spots, with their vegetables often confiscated.

Expressing anger and frustration, the vendors demanded the dissolution of the AMC, accusing the civic body of “disrespecting the poor” and acting against the interests of small traders.

The protest comes amid an ongoing drive by the AMC to clear roadside vendors across various parts of Aizawl, a move that has drawn criticism from street vendors and farmer groups alike.
