Centre enters into ceasefire agreement with NSCN (K) Niki Sumi faction

NEW DELHI: In a significant boost to the Naga peace process, the Government of India has entered into a Ceasefire Agreement with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (K) Niki Sumi faction for a period of one year.

"In fulfilling the vision of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of ‘Insurgency free and prosperous North East’ and in a significant boost to the Naga peace process, under the guidance of Union Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, the Government of India has entered into a Ceasefire Agreement with National Socialist Council of Nagaland (K) Niki Sumi Group, with effect from 08th September 2021 for a period of one year and more than 200 cadres of this group along with 83 weapons joined the peace process. The Ceasefire Agreement and Agreed Ceasefire Ground Rules were signed on 08th September of 2021," read a notification issued by the Home Ministry.

The Government of India has already signed a Framework Agreement with NSCN (IM) and Ceasefire Agreements with other Naga groups namely, NSCN(NK), NSCN(R), and NSCN(K)-Khango.

Niki Sumi is the prime suspect in the attack on an Army convoy in Manipur's Chandel district on June 4, 2015. As many as 18 Indian Army soldiers were killed in the ambush carried out by NSCN (K) cadres who had come from Myanmar.

Sumi, a one-time resident of Naharbari in Dimapur, was named by the Indian government as the key figure in the June 4 ambush, along with the finance chief of the NSCN (K), Starson Lamkang, and ‘Major General’ Neymlang.

Numbering an estimated 1,500 personnel, Sumi’s units are active in the eastern parts of Nagaland, as well as in the Tirap and Changlang districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
