A group people tried to forcefully enter a local jail and ransacked many vehicles in Kohima on Wednesday in search of two alleged murderers.
The whole incident took place after a group of people from a rally took out a protest over the alleged murder of a police inspector demanding justice.
The irked mob tried to break into the Kohima District Jail and demanded the police to hand over the accused to them. During the incident the people also damaged an SUV and a motorcycle that were parked in front of the jail premises.
However, police sources informed that the accused who were arrested from Guwahati were not lodged in that jail. They were kept in some other jail but the location of the jail cannot be disclosed due to security reasons.
It may be mentioned that Yaruingam R Shimray was arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Guwahati on Sunday evening.
GRP sources said the accused was nabbed after a hot chase at New Guwahati. He attempted to flee on seeing the personnel zeroing on him. He is said to be a known notorious criminal.
Shimray had allegedly murdered Neiphretuo Metsei-o, an inspector of Nagaland Police, recently and fled with the police officer’s vehicle.
Metsei-o was missing since September 7 and his body was found in a forest between Lasumi and Zapami village under Pfutsero sub-division four days later. The body reportedly bore bullet marks with the limbs tied.
Earlier, the Manipur Police arrested a woman, Ringthingchon of Lunghar, from Ukhrul district in Manipur in connection with the murder.
The irked mob was in search of these two arrested persons.
