Guwahati, January 14, 2019:

With the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 coming under fire from all corners of the North east, the Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has also stated that the Bill needs review and expressed solidarity with the people who would be affected by the implementation of the proposed Bill.

While addressing the Poanglim Mini Hornbill at Tuensang on Saturday, Rio also stated that the Bill had been discussed by the cabinet on June 5 last year as well as on January 7 where they had assured that Nagas and Nagaland would be protected under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1893 and the Inner Line Permit regulations.

He also expressed surprise at the opposition NPF (Naga People’s Front) party for its condemnation of the Bill and added that they did not raise their voice when the voice was first introduced because they were running the State government in alliance with the BJP. He also accused the opposition of confusing people over the Bill.

He also urged people to stay calm as the Bill is yet to be passed at the Rajya Sabha and assured that there is still time left to review it.
