Dimapur, August 16, 2019:

Addressing the state on Independence Day, Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio expressed confidence on newly appointed Governor, RN Ravi, who is also the Centre’s interlocutor for Naga peace talks.

He said that the appointment would aid in advancing political negotiations between the state and the Centre. Rio urged the Naga people and the neighbouring states to work on peace and live together in the truest traditions of “harmony and friendship”.

Hinting the appointment as “golden opportunity” for peaceful solution to the Indo-Naga political issue, Rio said that it was time to unite and accelerate talks for long-lasting peace in the state and neighbouring areas.

He added that Naga people had always been for the integration of all adjoining areas and that his government had been supportive of integration and democratic rights of the people.

It is to be mentioned here that the government had signed a framework agreement in 2015 for a settlement of the Nagas with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isaac-Muivah) and Ravi had drawn six other Naga armed groups, also called Naga National Political Groups into talks. He initiated another agreement in 2017 with the working committee but reached a deadlock last year.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said he hoped that Ravi’s appointment as governor would lead a good message to the Naga people. “I look forward to working with him [Ravi] in our common endeavour to uplifting our people and bringing lasting peace,” he said on Twitter.

RN Ravi also, in his maiden speech as Governor of Nagaland, shared his vision of development in the state. Highlighting the need to improve the state’s infrastructure, he urged the people to unite and work for a peaceful state so that it is free of violence and corruption in order to pave way for entrepreneurial opportunities of the youth.

According to a report by The Morung Express, the newly appointed governor assured that Article 371(A) was a sacred commitment to the state. He said, “I would like to categorically assure you all that you do not have to worry at all. Article 371(A) is a solemn commitment to the People of Nagaland. It is a sacred commitment.” He added, “We are earnestly working to happily conclude the ongoing political process which is at a very advanced stage. God be with us all.”
