Nagaland: ENSF agitation enters Day 2, passes off peacefully

KOHIMA: The second day of the second phase of agitation called by the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) to press for its demands passed off peacefully on Tuesday.

On the second day of the agitation, the six federating units of the ENSF boycotted the Statehood Day celebration, locked down government offices and restricted movement of government registered vehicles at their respective headquarters.

President of the federation Sepili L Sangtam said the second day of the agitation was peaceful and successful. He said a government vehicle was seized today for not respecting the directives issued by the federation. According to reports, 11 government vehicles were seized on the first day of the agitation on Monday.

Sangtam said the seized vehicles will be released only when the demands of the federation are fulfilled.

He said the federation attended a meeting convened by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, along with principal secretary to the chief minister, to its demands at the chief minister’s residential complex in Kohima today. As the meeting remained inconclusive, the federation decided to continue the agitation in entire eastern Nagaland until the demands are fulfilled, he said.

The federation acknowledged the chief minister for the concern shown and also inviting it to discuss the issue pertaining to the ultimatum served by it. However, Sangtam said the meeting could not come to a logical conclusion as the chief minister said some more time is required and the cabinet’s approval is needed to address all the charter of demands put forth by the federation.

The federation extended its gratitude to the six federating units for their continued support and cooperation to it and also to the eastern Nagaland people for expressing solidarity with the cause.

On November 26, the federation, in an ultimatum, announced to launch an indefinite agitation against the state government for not fulfilling its demands related to the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) and non-implementation of personnel and administrative reforms by the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC). It had also decided to boycott the Statehood Day and the Hornbill Festival 2020.
