Nagaland govt sets up SIT to probe Mon firing; one more killed in protests

KOHIMA: The Nagaland government on Sunday set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the firing incident in which at least 14 civilians were killed in an area between Tiru and Oting village in Mon district. One more civilian was killed in violent protests today, while another was seriously injured.

Following a ban on internet services and bulk SMS, the district administration also imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in Mon.

Chief Secretary J Alam, issuing the notice, said that there were firing incidents on Saturday in an area between Tiru and Oting village involving security forces in which 14 civilians died and many others were injured. One security personnel was killed and at least 4 injured.

“In this regard, an FIR under Sections 302, 307 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Tizit police station. Investigation has been taken up by Mon district police,” the order added.

To facilitate free and fair investigation of the case and looking at the complexity of the case, which may involve investigation in multiple jurisdictions beyond the district, it has been decided to transfer the investigation of the matter to the State Crime Police Station (SCPS). The probe will be taken up by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The SIT will comprise Limasunup Jamir, IPG(R), CIO; Roopa M, DIG (CID), Monoj Kumar, SP (Crime); Kilang Walling, SP and Relo Aye, Deputy Commandent, 15 NAP IR. The team will conduct an investigation under the overall supervision of Sandep M Tamgadge, ADGP, Law and Order.

According to the order, “The SIT may co-opt any other members of the police department into the team as deemed fit.”
