Nagaland: NPF MP K G Kenye Resigns as Secretary General after being Served Show Cause Notice for 'Supporting' CABNagaland

Guwahati, December 21, 2019:

Secretary general of Naga People’s Front (NPF) K G Kenye, who is the Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland, has resigned from his post this Friday. Kenye said that he has resigned from his post, and not from the party.

His resignation came a day after he was issued a show cause notice by the NPF disciplinary action committee for voting in favour of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the Parliament.

K G Kenye, in his response to the media, stated that it was a matter of status and image within the party, thus, he had to put forward his resignation.

Kenye explained that he had voted in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 – CAB – as it granted immunity to Nagaland under provision of Inner Line Permit (ILP) under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) 1873.

The two MPs of NPF – Kenye and Lok Sabha member from Outer Manipur Lorho S Pfoze – had been asked to submit their replies within seven days from the date of issue of the show-cause notices, on or before December 26.

The notices came after the party’s central executive council held a meeting on Thursday to deliberate on the actions to be taken against both the MPs for their conduct during the recent Winter Session of Parliament when the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed.

Kenye stated in the letter addressed to the NPF president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu, that in the face of being served the demonstrated cause notice by the party’s disciplinary action committee, which he had received on the night of December 19, he had put forward his resignation from the post of secretary general.

The Nagaland MP's resignation letter stated, “It is a very rare case that a high profile party office bearer should fall under the DAC scanner as my integrity has become questionable.”

“Therefore, I am taking this step so as to save the prestige and image of the party,” he acknowledged in the letter.

“It has been an honour to serve under your leadership for many years. I wish you good luck and God’s blessing,” he added.
