Nagaland | PDA decision on Citizenship Amendment Bill unforgivable: NPCCCitizenship Amendment Bill

Guwahati, January 28, 2019:

Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has described the boycott of Republic Day celebrations across Nagaland as “a slap in the face” for both People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government in the state and BJP government at the centre for “disregarding the voices of people” against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

NPCC through its communication department said the northeast region was in turmoil due to blatant attitude of BJP to push through CAB, which is now pending in Rajya Sabha.

Congress, however, stated that the PDA government has been “caught in a self defeating situation” with its “feeble” explanation that defied the “very logic of our elected members’ ability to protect the interest of our people.”

NPCC said the PDA cabinet decision on CAB was therefore “unforgivable”. It added that any sensible PDA legislator must resign in protest if they had any concern left for the people.

Congress party affirmed its stand that CAB be scrapped in total since it was “highly polarising and dangerous” for small state like Nagaland where unabated influx of migrants especially in Dimapur and other foothill areas threatened the demography of state.

It mentioned that AGP in Assam has parted ways with BJP due to CAB, NPP was threatening to “kick out” BJP in Meghalaya, MNF in Mizoram was all out against CAB and the BJP government in Manipur has passed resolution urging exemption of Manipur from CAB implementation.

Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, however, stated that the “knee jerk reaction” of the PDA government and the “deafening silence” of BJP and its legislators was “an added insult to the collective conscience of the people.”

Alleging that PDA government has “totally lost the confidence of the people as is evident from empty grounds during Republic Day celebrations”, the Congress reiterated its stand with the people of Nagaland in “totally opposing the communal CAB”, adding that it would not allow BJP to ride roughshod over the interest of the people.

Further, the state Congress extended its solidarity with the NSF and ENSF and all their federating units for being in the forefront against CAB. It also appealed to all right thinking citizens cutting across political party affiliations to voice out in total unison and prevent “this dangerous communal bill”.
