Nagaland: Use of violence against quarantine inmates criticised

There are reports about the use of force to shut the voice of 60 returnees from Bangalore kept at one Quarantine building at Ganeshnagar, Dimapur, Nagaland. Chairs got smashed and some were grievously injured during the beating. Later the medical staff had to provide First Aid. The use of charged electric shock gun to shoot at one guy, and later beating up of the Bangalore returnees with lathis by the Police personnel have been criticised by concerned citizens.

Few are demanding that the Nagaland Govt set up an enquiry and the state employee responsible for this, as well as the catering in charge and the District Administration be suspended.

Sources allege that 40-50 police personnel entered one of the Sector building of the returnees from Bangalore, where the Nagaland inmates were beaten up. The incident occurred at Building No - 1, Ganesh Nagar Quarantine Center, Dimapur.

Nagaland: How it started?

The issues started because the returnees complained about the rotten chicken that was served. Sources say that the returnees were warned not to circulate videos and images, they were threatened that in future their careers would be affected and they would find it difficult to get a job if they leaked videos or photos of the incident.

Speaking on the issue, Mr. K. Temjen, Chief Editor of Tir yimyim, said: "Covid19 war should not be fought by lathis and or by using torture methods like electric shock. No matter how mischievous the inmates could be in the quarantine, it's a matter of human rights abuse. We must entrust counselors instead of policemen and listen to their grievances and treat them with human dignity."
