Kohima, October 20, 2019:

Suspected Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim, Khaplang (NSCN-K) militants reportedly opened fire on a 40 Assam Rifles Delta Company camp located at Chenloisho in Mon district of Nagaland.

The crossfire took place for around one-and-a-half hours between the Assam Rifles and the militants. The militants reportedly opened fire on a column of the Assam Rifles camped out in the village.

According to reports, many villagers also sustained bullet injuries in the episode. At least 75 empty cartridges and 40mm grenade cartridges were also recovered from the spot.

It may be mentioned that on May last, two Assam Rifles jawans were martyred and four others injured after suspected NSCN-K militants ambushed a convoy of the Assam Rifles troops in Mon.

This incident comes amidst heightened tensions in Nagaland with the 'final solution' to the Nagas' problem expected to be reached upon by October 31, which has been set as the deadline by the Central Government.

With the Naga peace talks drawing towards a conclusion, much of the contention has been regarding a separate flag as well as Constitution for the Naga people. Now, RN Ravi, the Nagaland Governor and Interlocutor, has announced that the Government is clear in its stand that there will be no separate flag or Constitution for the Nagas.
